Biography
In 1978 Dan moved
from Texas to San Francisco to join the staff of Pacific
News Service. For the next eight years PNS syndicated
his op-ed illustrations to newspapers and magazines in the
United States, Europe, Africa and Latin America. In 1984
The Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco gave Dan a
one man show retrospective of his political illustrations
to coincide with the National Democratic Convention. In 1986
while one of his political illustrations was being banned
from the anti-apartheid newspaper Rand Daily Mail by
the then racist government of South Africa, another was being
given top honors in the Best Editorial Cartoons of the
Year Publication in the United states.
Since the 90's
Dan has worked as a freelance illustrator, Art Director,
an adjunct professor of Illustration at California College
of Arts and Crafts and the Academy of Art College as well
as holding a staff illustrator position at the San Francisco
Chronicle.
He has won awards
from Print Magazine, Communications Arts Magazine,
The Society of Newspaper Design, Step by Step Magazine (both
the Japanese and American versions), Western Art Director's
Club and was the recipient of the Meritorious Achievement
Award from the Media Alliance of San Francisco. A collection
of his work was included in the book Illustrator Masters.
Dan lives in
San Francisco with his journalist wife, Wendy, and her guitar
playing son, Ben (who is a student at SF's School of the
Arts) and their smelly and shamefully disobedient dog, Kirby.
Dan's daughter,
Mari lives in Austin Texas where she is an educator/administrator
working with the deaf community.
